Co-organised by the Hauts-de-France Polytechnic University (UPHF, Valenciennes) and the Lille Northern France Higher Education & Research Institutions Association (ComUE LNF), the France Excellence Summer School TRANSPORT 2019 is a strong 120-hour training programme focusing on the fundamental aspects of environment-friendly transport systems, in line with top-tier research centres and leading sustainable and intermodal transport industry clusters (1st European area for railway, 2nd French area for car industry, 3rd French area for transport logistics).
Midway between Paris, London and Brussels, at the heart of a high-performance academic and economic hub that makes innovation a priority, TRANSPORT 2019 will provide, on forward-looking and lively campuses, high-standard English-taught classes, scientific and industrial immersion in the field, as well as an introduction to research through a supervised project.
Broadening your international experience under enjoyable and comfortable conditions with fellow students from pre-PhD France Excellence Summer Schools, TRANSPORT 2019 will offer lively social and festive events, full welcome services (incl. accommodation and catering), consistent French language and culture classes, as well as visits of remarkable historical and natural sites in Northern France and Belgium, opening access to a European region always on the move.
The 2019 France Excellence Summer School “Towards Intelligent & Sustainable Optimisation of Transport Systems” (Sustainable Transport 2019) is co-organised by the Communauté d’Universités et Établissements Lille Nord de France (ComUE LNF), the University of Valenciennes and Hainaut-Cambrésis (UVHC), the Laboratory of industrial and Human Automation control, Mechanical engineering and Computer science (LAMIH UMR CNRS 8201) and the National Engineering School in Computer science, Automatics, Mechanics, Energetics and Electronics (ENSIAME).
Sustainable Transport 2019 will focus on the fundamental aspects of transports systems. Particular emphasis will be placed on materials, energy, comfort, safety and reliability aspects of propulsion systems. In addition, innovative strategies on the life cycle management of a propulsion system in an eco-design context will be discussed.
This Summer School will provide, on two advanced and lively scientific campuses, high-standard, English-taught classes, meetings with top-tier researchers in the field as well as an introduction to research through a supervised project.
European Credit Transfer and accumulation System (ECTS) credits will be delivered to the student attendees. A personalised Certificate of Completion will be provided to each participant for their achievements.
Due to a rapid industrialisation, an accelerated urbanisation, a population explosion and an environmental deterioration, the world faces significant challenges in the areas of intelligent and sustainable transports. Transport is fundamental to development in a large-scale, global sense, and it has at the same time a profound, personal impact on individual lives. In this context, sustainable mobility policy for small and long-distance transportation services should consider emerging automobiles, aircrafts and railway systems, as well as their effects on infrastructures and supply chain life cycle, the main issue being to offer new mobility solutions for traffic regulation and gas-emission limitation in order to reduce congestion and air pollution.
Participants in Sustainable Transport 2019 will get to familiarise themselves with the design and development of new means of transport that are both more ecological and more efficient.
The scientific programme will be organised by both the LAMIH research laboratory (260 members, www.univ-valenciennes.fr/LAMIH) and the ENSIAME engineering school (120 members, www.univ-valenciennes.fr/ensiame) from the University of Valenciennes and Hainaut-Cambrésis.
The ENSIAME engineering school offers a high-level training and innovation, in synergy with industry, transport operators, centres of excellence and in line with future innovation needs. It also has two double degrees with Chinese Universities: University of Tongji (Shanghai) and North Eastern University (Shenyang), the best Chinese students being then selected to continue in co-supervised PhD degrees in the LAMIH research laboratory.
As a member of the Research Federation CNRS TTM (Transports Terrestres Mobilité), the LAMIH research laboratory belongs to several scientific networks in the field of intelligent and sustainable transport, and has developed strong partnerships with academic and industrial partners around the world. For example, it includes a joint laboratory SurferLab with Bombardier dedicated to intelligent and sustainable transport development and offers many PhD theses in collaboration with professionals of the transport industry such as Alstom, SNCF, RATP, Valeo, Continental, PSA, Renault, Toyota Motor Europe, Safran and Airbus Helicopters, etc.
Moreover, the University of Valenciennes and Hainaut-Cambrésis is at the heart of one of the most dynamic European territories in the automobile, railway and mobility industries (1st European area for railway, 1st French area for car industry, 3rd French area for transport logistics), a sector that is experiencing a revolution on a global scale as it moves into the era of multimodality, economical, environmentally friendly vehicles and innovative services for mobility.
Finally, the city of Valenciennes also hosts the headquarters of the European Union Agency for Railways, AIA (the automotive cluster), i-Trans (the world-class competitiveness cluster), AIF (the association of railway industries), IRT Railenium (the institute of technological research Railenium, a railway testing centre) and finally Transalley (the technopole dedicated to innovative and sustainable mobility, located in the extension of Mont Houy University Campus).
Midway between Paris, London and Brussels, you will be given the opportunity to learn French, discover French society and culture and visit historical and natural sites of the Hauts-de-France region. Cultural and social events will enable you to meet other international students and communicate in Chinese, English and French in a relaxed and festive atmosphere.
In Valenciennes, accommodation, meals and cultural visits will be organised by the UVHC department of International Relations. In Lille, the cultural and linguistic programme, as well as the welcome services (accommodation and catering included), will be offered by the International Academy, the Summer University for international students at the Communauté d’Universités et Établissements Lille Nord de France.
The International Academy is devoted to offering services to international students incoming on pre-PhD degrees, filling the requirements of the France Excellence Programme that focuses on potential integration of a PhD in France.
The linguistic and socio-cultural programme ensures your full immersion into the life of the International Academy summer campus, which will admit during the summer students worldwide on individual mobility or on an exchange programme with France. The International Academy fosters integration and interactive exchange between students from various disciplines.
